Top Ten Tuesday is hosted over at the other blog I write for, The Broke and the Bookish.
So, today we get to talk all about books and their movie adaptations. The actual topic deals with best or worst book to movie adaptations, but since I've seen a ton of movies based on books I haven't read... and read a ton of books that were made into movies I haven't seen... I thought I'd switch it up a little to suit my needs. My first 5 choices are books I've decided I need to read because of the movie. My second 5 choices are movies I need to watch because I read the book.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (all of The Chronicles of Narnia, actually) by C.S. Lewis
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Austenland by Shannon Hale
The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle
Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
(I'm totally cheating here, but a movie is in the process!)
So, what are your thoughts? Have you seen/read any of these? Do you agree with my choices?
And seriously, anyone want to plan a movie night? :D
Omg! Dash and Lily's Book of Dares is being made into a movie??! Maybe I'm unnecessarily excited because I haven't even read the book - but I REALLY want to, and I already think it would make an adorable movie. XD

Clever you. I wanted to put some movies down but realized I haven't read the books so left them off. If I'd only been thinking along your lines. The Princess Bride is a favorite so I really must read the book. Same goes for True Grit. Fun list.
ReplyDeleteI need to read The Princess Bride, too. It's one of the most quotable movies of all time. I really like the first Narnia movie, just not the second. And The Devil Wears Prada movie was good- I should really read that, too! :)

I didn't even know that Austenland was a movie. I'll have to look it up. But I do agree The Princess Bride is a fantastic book.
ReplyDeleteGah I need to read AND watch The Host! Everyone says its s good, but the Twilight movie and the last book in the Twilight series made me nervous to do either one! Great list!

ReplyDeleteI attempted the read The Princess Bride, because I loved the movie so much, but only got through half of it. It's meant to be a really funny book, it was just too bad it wasn't my kind of humour :S

ReplyDeleteIf you loved the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, I'm sure you'll find that reading the accompanying novel is no trouble as much of the mini-series included direct quotes from the original story. Having watched the adaptation already, I think you'll enjoy the novel all the more as you'll be able to follow along very easily and picture the beautifully rendered scenes in the mini-series as you read the novel :D
I think I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada more in its original book form. I absolutely fell in love with it when I first read it, and while I loved Meryl Streep in the film adaptation, I was less enthused about the casting of Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt. I'm happy I read the book first as I was able to picture the characters on my own without having to relate them to those specific actors, who I'm not sure were best suited to the characters they were playing (And I say that as an Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt fan) I would definitely be interested to hear what you thought of the novel as you'll be reading it after watching the adaptation!
I've read and watched The Host, and eventhough I liked the casts (cool people!) the whole movie was a meh :\ except for the beautiful landscapes and pretty costumes, everything else was kinda boring.

Btw, I didn't know they're making Dash & Lily's Book of Dares movie! Yay! I love the book and I hope the movie will be great XD

Don't bother reading The Devil Wears Prada - the movie is the masterpiece. But you MUST MUST MUST read Austen.

Yes to The Princess Bride. I love that movie. It's so delightful. I attempted to read North and South, but it was soo dull. I prefer to watch Richard Armitage and listen to his baritone voice. Lol.

I really enjoyed the movie of The Devil Wears Prada, though haven't read the book yet and I've heard a lot of negative things about the book. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe are both excellent books and movies, though admittedly the next two movies are not as good but still worth seeing to compare them to the books.

I haven't read The Devil Wears Prada, either! Glad I'm not the only one, lol. I also still need to read (and then watch) Austenland. I'm shocked that I haven't yet read it! Nice list!
ReplyDeleteI love The Princess Bride, both the book & movie. They're not exactly the same (the book has more to it), but they're both amazing. And I want to read North & South too, since the miniseries was awesome (I will be picturing Richard Armitage the whole time).
ReplyDeleteI also want to see The Host, since I loved the book. I just saw the trailer for Austenland, and I've got to admit I'm a little worried about how they've adapted it, but I'm going to keep an open mind.

ReplyDeleteHave you watched BBC's Sherlock? They did a version of the Hound of Baskervilles. The Jeremy Brett version is really good too!
I would totally be up for reading The Princess Bride with you, as I've never finished reading it. *confession time* I seriously want to though, because it sounds like something I'd enjoy!
ReplyDeleteNorth and South is a great novel - I highly recommend it! I liked the tv-series but the book is so much better, as it usually is. :)
ReplyDeleteI saw The Hound of the Baskervilles (the 1959 version, I think) on TV not long ago when there was nothing else on. Oh, how I wish there had been something else on. It was both corny and boring. I have no desire to read the book after seeing that movie!
