So... I love Stephanie Perkins. LOVE HER. And I love Anna and Lola. And I am SOEXCITED!!!! for Isla. But... I'm not sure how I feel about the cover for it. Or the new covers for Anna and Lola. Don't get me wrong. I did not love the original covers either. But... they have become rather iconic, you know? And they looked like YA romances. These new ones don't, in my opinion. I like the colors, the pictures, and the pull away from pretty girls on covers, but I really do not like the typography. I dunno. I guess they need to marinate in my mind a little, but upon first look, I'm kind of iffy about this...
Discussion: So, how do you feel? Do you like these new covers? If so, what do you like about them? Are you iffy like I am?

I'm not a fan of the new covers, I think they are boring in comparison to the original covers. I wish they had published Isla with a girl on the cover, so that it would have the cute, unique look like the others. :)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a fan of the original covers at first either, but they're just so right for the books and cute and they've grown on me. These are just so boring compared to them! And I agree with you that they don't look like YA romances anymore, I get that they want to appeal to more readers, but I just don't like them... :(
ReplyDeleteExactly! I had actually put off reading Anna because the cover didn't appeal to me at all, but I think that was part of its charm and what made this "series" stand out. I was also really looking forward to the Isla cover, to see what Isla actually looks like and all that. And as much as I love minimalistic book covers, I just don't feel like these do the books justice. They could AT LEAST have used a pretty font, because that sets me off the most.
ReplyDeleteI actually kind of like this new cover of Anna with the Eiffel Tower and the heart. The execution of the new concept (city + symbol) is less successfull in the other two books' case, imo. And yeah, the fonts could have been nicer.
ReplyDeleteMy perspective might be a little different on this one because... I haven't read the first two books yet. I know, I know, shame on me. I'm getting there! But, I really kind of adore these new covers. I like that they're pretty and I like the divergence from the girl on cover motif. I think the font type is meh, though, like you. A little boring. And it does take away from the YA-ness. I think that was the point in the redesign, though. Make it more appealing to older crowds.
ReplyDeleteI'm iffy as well! I think they look more like posters of cities that you would hand in your room or something.... But doesn't really scream YA or contemporary! And I agree, not a fan of the typography.
ReplyDeleteI love them as a group too - the colors are just so gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteyou took the words out of my mouth.. the typography, in my opinion, is seriously horrible.. i mean this is like normal tahoma and it DOESNT fit with these covers! Like you said, I am also not the BIGGEST fan of the old covers but they HAVE become iconic.. i am sad we won't be able to see the third cover now that would match the old covers

Oh dear. No, no, no. I haven't read her books but I agree, the old covers really suited this whole YA genre. I'm not sure about these. The colours and the photos are nice and I think they'd look nice as posters on a wall but -for me- they don't really work as book covers :( And especially YA book covers.
ReplyDeleteI like the new covers more than the old covers, but I think that's just personal preference. The photos are pretty and they make me want to visit those places, but I think the typography could use a bit of work...
ReplyDeleteSo I love these covers. What's annoying is that now Isla doesn't even kinda match. The other two I felt like the cover art wasn't as coordinated as most series so this doesn't bug me or maybe it's just that I hated the other covers so much
ReplyDeleteThey look quite nice but more like space holders. So annoyed about cover changes halfway through a series though -.- !!
ReplyDeleteI like the new covers better, BUT I think it's crappy to redesign before the third books comes out. Publishers know that a lot of book lovers will want their books to "match" and hope it results in more book sales.
ReplyDeleteLuckily for me I kindled the first two and was planning to buy them eventually. Now I can get all three in the new version.
Ooooh actually I adore these covers.
ReplyDeleteI think I only own one of the books so I can wait and get them all in this. I don't usually like redesigns when I like the new one better than the first and already own it :/
I am not a fan of these new covers and I especially dislike that they redid them before the final book came out! Now my books won't match!! I'm really ocd about things like that.
ReplyDeleteI don't hate the covers, but I definitely prefer the original. The originals had character in my opinion and these are just kind of blah. I'm not a fan of the typography either.
I don't like the new cover. Even though I'm not in love with the old cover, this style doesn't suit me, or in my opinion, the books. I'm with Jenn who said that the book covers won't match - I hate that...I've been known to get rid of all my books in a series to get them all in the same binding and style.
ReplyDeleteP.S. A review by you is what got me interested in this series to begin with. Thanks!!
