Top Ten Tuesday is hosted over at the other blog I write for, The Broke and the Bookish.
If I see any of these words on a book's cover, in its summary, or mentioned in reviews from reputable sources, I get scared and usually run away!
Heartbreaking: Seriously. I read to escape from reality, not get heartbroken.
Erotic: 50 Shades of Ick.
Cancer: I just can't guys! I get toooooo sad!
Animal Violence/Death: You hurt/kill an animal, and I'll punch you in the throat and burn your book.
Ugly Tears: See my reason for heartbreaking.
Abuse: You hurt my peeps, and I'll punch you in the throat.
Cheating: Cheating as a plot line just sucks. I don't condone cheaters, so why promote a book about them? Plain and simple.
Zombie: I don't understand the attraction. They are ugly and smell like death.
New Adult: I have yet to find a NA book I like/am interested in. For some reason, authors portray people in this age group as heartbroken sex maniacs. Anyone else noticed this? Almost every summary talks about a character with a sad/dark past who finds someone who lights their fire. It's just not my thing. PLEASE show me a YA that does not do this.
Angels/Fallen Angels: I've come to the conclusion that I just do not like books about angels. I just don't.
I also hate it when books are compared to other books I like. Like, how many books out there say they are like The Hunger Games? I LOVE that book, and I'll pretty much be disappointed by anything that is "just like it".
So, tell me what you're thinking! Agree? Disagree? Do you know of any books that I just HAVE to read despite my feelings? I wanna know!
*Disclaimer: And aw man! I wanted to make a pretty graphic today, but I ran out of time! I guess a simple list will just have to do.
I had to include zombies on my list as well! I can wrap my mind around the sexy factor surrounding vampires or werewolves, but zombies? NO THANK YOU! Same with anything about angels. It just seems sacrilegious to me. Great post!

I feel the same way about music: I generally don't want it to be sad or about tough topics like abuse. I listen to music to cheer up, not to become depressed!
ReplyDeleteI'm not too big on angel books either. I did enjoy Unearthly because I thought Cynthia Hand did a good job of making her angels actually angelic, in a pure, almost religious way. A lot of literary "angels" are just people with wings.
Erotic made my list this week too. I forgot to add cheating and the like, definitely do no enjoy novels like that. Or books featuring cancer as a prominent theme as those are just too sad =(

ReplyDeleteDear Jana, what about Akiva from Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke & Bones? I'm not fond of angels on YA books too, but Akiva is my exception ;)

A great list! Except for the angel. :D I have always been really into the angel mythology thing, even though I'm not a religious at all. I just find them really intriguing creatures. :)

Erotic and angels are definitely on my list. I'm never comfortable with authors describing sex scenes to me. It just feels so dirty and EW.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I'm not a fan of angels either. I read Outcast which was about angels a while back and that was all right but not enough to make me want to pick up an angel book. They kind of creep me out anyway.
Totally with you on New Adult and cheating. And I used to think zombies weren't my thing either until my boyfriend lent me his copy of World War Z, which I quickly fell in love with. I can't say I'm on a zombie spree or anything, but I would like to read Warm Bodies one day (I liked the movie).

Love the list! Totally agree on "heartbreaking"... I also read books to escape the "problems" of real life, so why would I like to read about those problems? I mentioned something like that in my list too :D

Re: New Adult - check out Sweet Thing! I read it the other weekend and I thought it was great. It's NA without being what you'd typically think of NA. If that makes sense. The author is Renee...er...Carlino? *checks Goodreads* Yes, that's it!

I disagree with you about NA, because it's becoming more than that but I think that we need to give it a little bit more time to grow and really come into itself without actually jumping on the "NA is horrible, never read it" train. There are some really great NA authors out there that I've fallen in love with and there are some great books that I've read that aren't just about a young college girl in her twenty's trying to find a guy to light her fire to take away her dark past. I like NA particularly because it's darker, more realistic, and it actually has a really good grasp of what people in that age bracket are.
